Real/IRL names policy on Discord
Game Makers Iceland is first and foremost an IRL community of professional, aspiring and hobbyist game devs who live in Iceland and meet up regularly for events. Our Discord serves as a digital extension of our physical community, providing a platform for networking, collaboration, & knowledge sharing. To maintain the professionalism and integrity of our community, we have specific guidelines regarding member identity.
- Real names: Members are encouraged to use the name they introduce themselves by IRL to promote transparency as well as facilitate trust and recognition among members. Please note that you do not need to use your full name nor does it have to be your legal name, just whatever name you use IRL, when you introduce yourself at one of our events. If you go by a nickname IRL, feel free to go by that on the Discord.
- Nicknames: Feel free to also include a nickname, especially if you use it professionally or relating to games (e.g. name under which you create content or publish games and you are known in the community by the nickname). If the nickname is not something you would go by IRL, please include your real first name in front of it in this format: Real Name / Nickname.,
- Studio affiliation: If you want to, you may include the name of the studio you work for in your server profile, using this format: Name (Studio Name).,
Using your real/IRL name helps build a culture of accountability, respect, and connection. With nearly the entire Icelandic games industry active in our community, real names make it easier to form meaningful relationships that can genuinely support your career in game development. It also helps us maintain a safe environment which is especially important given the in-person dimension of this community. Please set your server profile in the GMI Discord to a name that meets the above requirements.
