Are you passionate about game development and connected to the Icelandic community? Whether you currently live in Iceland or have ties to the local scene, we invite you to join our vibrant Discord community! Here, you can connect with other game developers, ask questions, collaborate on projects, and much more.
How to join
In order to gain access to our Discord community, we ask that you fill out this application form. Note: if you were already a member of our Slack community, there is a special invite link for you which you can access on our Slack. If you can’t log into Slack for whatever reason, the easiest way for you to join the Discord is by filling out the application form.
Why do I need apply for membership?
We require an application to join for two main reasons. Firstly, to prevent spammers from joining our server. Any game dev community unfortunately attracts content farmers looking for clicks on their content or spammers promoting/selling access to content. Secondly, our Discord workspace is a valuable networking platform for the Icelandic games industry and its peripheral communities, such as the indie, academic, and art scenes. By requiring pre-approval, we maintain the integrity and value of our community, ensuring it remains a meaningful place for career advancement and collaboration.
Membership criteria
We review membership requests based on the following criteria:
- You are or have been employed in the Icelandic games industry, or you are an investor in the industry.
- You work for a games company with a presence in Iceland but are located elsewhere due to remote work or being part of a different studio (e.g., CCP Games, Directive Games, Mainframe Industries, Klang, etc.).
- You live in Iceland and work remotely for a games company based elsewhere.
- You are an indie game developer, hobby game developer, or artist based in Iceland.
- You are a student, researcher, or academic working on game development-related projects or research.
- You have other connections to the Icelandic game dev community, such as academic or professional collaborations, even if you live abroad.
Our Discord server is created and maintained for the local game dev and indie community to engage with each other, advertise job opportunities, network, and seek advice. It is not an open forum for general game development discussions, and we will deny requests lacking a connection to the local scene.
Real/IRL names policy on Discord
Game Makers Iceland is first and foremost an IRL community of professional, aspiring and hobbyist game devs who live in Iceland and meet up regularly for events. Our Discord serves as a digital extension of our physical community, providing a platform for networking, collaboration, & knowledge sharing. To maintain the professionalism and integrity of our community, we have specific guidelines regarding member identity.
- Real names: Members are encouraged to use the name they introduce themselves by IRL to promote transparency as well as facilitate trust and recognition among members. Please note that you do not need to use your full name nor does it have to be your legal name, just whatever name you use IRL, when you introduce yourself at one of our events. If you go by a nickname IRL, feel free to go by that on the Discord.
- Nicknames: Feel free to also include a nickname, especially if you use it professionally or relating to games (e.g. name under which you create content or publish games and you are known in the community by the nickname). If the nickname is not something you would go by IRL, please include your real first name in front of it in this format: Real Name / Nickname.,
- Studio affiliation: If you want to, you may include the name of the studio you work for in your server profile, using this format: Name (Studio Name).,
Using your real/IRL name helps build a culture of accountability, respect, and connection. With nearly the entire Icelandic games industry active in our community, real names make it easier to form meaningful relationships that can genuinely support your career in game development. It also helps us maintain a safe environment which is especially important given the in-person dimension of this community. Please set your server profile in the GMI Discord to a name that meets the above requirements.
